About Group Obedience Classes

Puppy Preschool

Class Description

Congratulations! You have a new puppy, how exciting!

Puppy classes are an indispensable foundation to the rest of your puppy’s life; let’s start them off on the right paw!

In our puppy class we start building the foundations for “come” “leave it” and “stay” right away, which once your puppy is grown can be potentially life saving cues. Yet, at the same time your puppy thinks its the greatest thing in the world, interacting with other puppies, people and objects which will help to prevent potential fearful reactions to new noises (thunderstorms), strangers, children and different dogs.

We create a fun and exciting environment so that your puppy can interact without fear to new situations.

We recommend starting Puppy Classes between 10-12 weeks. This is the ideal socialization period for puppies. In general, puppies can start puppy classes as early as 7-8 weeks of age. Puppies should receive a minimum of one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class and a first deworming. They should be kept up-to-date on vaccines throughout the class. We follow the recommendations of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior.

Puppy Kindergarten

Class Description

Is your adolescent dog driving you nuts?

Does your puppy still pull on their leash when they see another dog or person on walks? Or would you like your dog to come when you call them when there’s a squirrel around? Or what about being able to sit on the patio at The Wismer House and you dog stay with you?

These are not impossible tasks!

We focus on the 3 “Ds” of training: Distraction, Duration and Distance. Each of these will take place in the tasks we teach your dog, to help them grow into a perfect adult!

We’ve now added Go to Mat Training into our curriculum which will teach your dog to go lay on their mat during meal times or when someone comes to the door!

Basic Manners (For Adults)

Class Description

Think you can’t teach old dogs new tricks? Think again.

Our Basic Manners class is for any dog that needs a refresher class, or has never taken a class before. We want to rekindle that fun and exciting time back when they were puppies.

Imagine your dog got out the front door and was running towards the road – wouldn’t it be nice if you had a solid recall that would get them to turn on a dime? Our emergency recall “here” will teach them this! Most dogs hear “come” and they think, “What’s in it for me? Good or bad?” We will teach them again that “come” is great and they should pick you over the squirrel, cat or car.

We also will focus on loose leash walking techniques and tools so that you walk them, not the other way around. And wouldn’t it be great if you dropped a bunch of chocolate on the floor and your dog knew the “leave – it” cue meant don’t touch it? It can save your dog’s life when potentially poisonous items may be in their reach. And there’s much more.

We’ve now added “Go to Mat” training into our curriculum. This will teach your dog to go lay on their mat during meal times to prevent begging, or when someone comes to the door so they are not charging at your guests!

Benefits

  • Emergency Recall “Here”
  • Small class size
  • Off leash play with other dogs
  • Taught with “Real Life” distractions
  • Can be separated into Small and Large Dog Classes

Rally Obedience

Class Description

Rally Obedience is a fun sport that is a spin off of obedience. If you think obedience is boring, think again!

Rally provides a fun, fast paced way to work your dog through stays, heeling, various turns, stands, recalls (come when called), finishes and exercises such as jumping, sidesteps and a moving drop. This is also a fun way to freshen up your everyday obedience skills, like walking on a loose leash by distractions. It is a great way to work on focus and control around other dogs and build your dog up to a more advanced level obedience but in a more natural manner than formal obedience.

For instance in Rally you can talk to your dog as you work. Rally is a great way to build a working bond with your dog and the exercises are quite practical in real life as we all have encounter situations with our dogs where we need them to do a 360 degree turn on a walk perhaps to avoid something or come to us or switch sides when walking or move into heel position.

The dog and handler work as a team navigating through a course with numbered signs. Each sign indicates an exercise to perform ranging from sit and stay,  come when called then swinging into heel position, dropping into a down in heel position to turning a 360 degree circle to turning a serpentine or figure 8 to asking your dog to go over a jump or drop on a hand signal.
There is a start sign and a finish sign and the dog and owner quickly work their way through the various exercises without direction from the judge within a designated period of time.
Rally Obedience is open to all dogs.

Conformation Showhandling

Class Description

“Conformation” is the official name for “dog shows.” While they may seem glamorous, the true purpose of conformation showing is to evaluate the dogs overall appearance and structure and is an indication of the dog’s ability to do the job they were bred to do. That is what is being judged in the ring.

This drop in class is for dogs and/or handlers that are interested/ experienced in showing dogs in the conformation ring. Class size may vary from week to week. Students may alternate between 2 dogs over the course of the hour if they have multiple dogs.

Please ensure you bring indoor shoes, a conformation lead, bait and/or toys for your dog.

Registration is required for each session you wish to attend.
